Office of the Chief of Police

City of Everett Massachusetts

On behalf of the men and women of the Everett Police Department, I would like to welcome you to the Everett Police Department website.  We hope that this new and improved site is informative and useful to you.

The Everett Police Department is a full-service, professional law enforcement agency providing coverage twenty-four hours a day, three hundred sixty-five days a year.  Currently, there are one hundred sworn police officers and twelve civilian support staff.  In addition, there are thirty crossing guards and an Auxiliary department made up of fifteen officers who volunteer their time at community events.  The Everett Police Department makes use of college interns as well as participating in the summer jobs program.

We are well positioned to address any and all public safety needs, although we do rely on partnerships to provide the best possible service to the people of Everett.  Although most people see and have contact with our Operations personnel, who are on the front lines everyday responding to 911 calls and patrolling our streets, we have a number of specialized services available to get the job done.

In 2010, EPD had 91 sworn police Officers, 9 civilian staff and 1 sworn animal control Officer. We continue to make a difference in our residents’ lives by providing timely community information on numerous crime and safety issues. Some of our new initiatives this year included the new TIP411 system that allows residents to text-a-tip on criminal information, a new narcotics detection dog that filled the void of K9 Niko who passed away suddenly, a second explosive/firearms detection dog, new equipment for personnel working the waterfront, as well as technology for the 911 Dispatch Center and on the streets, such as our License Plate Reader (LPR) which has already made a difference in detecting stolen, unregistered and revoked motor vehicles. Lastly, we are participating in the Communities for Restorative Justice Program which allows us to address juvenile issues in a new productive way.

There continues to be concern with the level of violence that is occurring in most of the major cities in the Commonwealth. Everett is not immune, as we unfortunately experienced three homicides this year with two of them solved to date. We experienced the first Officer involved shooting in a number of years when a bank robbery suspect lunged at an Officer with a knife. We are working with our partners and neighbors from the metropolitan Boston area to develop strategies to reduce and remove those from the streets that commit these senseless acts of violence.

I am proud to say that the men and women of the Everett Police Department are committed to fighting crime, reducing fear and working with the community to provide fair and equal treatment for all.  We will continue to do our best.  As our motto says, “Serving With Pride Since 1870”.

                                                                                                                              Sincerely,

                                                                                                                              Chief Steven A. Mazzie
